Plenary Lecture

Dr. Martorano presented "Water Quality Considerations and Management Tools within the Agricultural Space."


Martorano directs the California Water Quality Monitoring Council and has over thirteen years of experience at the State Water Resources Control Board. He holds a B.S. in Aquatic Biology from UC Santa Barbara and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from San Diego State University.

Over 20 NextGen students had the opportunity to present their research, explore career paths, network with regional professionals and experts in food, agriculture, and natural resources, and receive valuable advice to better prepare for entering the workforce.

"Training the future workforce in sustainable food systems."

This guest panel session highlighted innovative approaches to training the future workforce in sustainable food systems. Led by Dr. Pascale Joassart-Marchelli, Dr. Amy Quandt, Dr. Changqi Liu, Dr. John Love, and Dr. Ramona Perez, the panel explored educational strategies that prepare students to address environmental challenges and promote resilient, equitable food systems.

Student Oral Presentations

These student presentations explore diverse approaches to climate adaptation and sustainable agriculture. Topics include climate impacts and adaptation strategies in Tanzania, with a focus on agroforestry and community insights from San Diego farmers. Other research highlights nutrient cycling in agriculture, such as phosphorus limitations and the potential of microalgae as food ingredients. Local sustainability efforts are also featured, including irrigation efficiency in California’s Imperial Valley and community participation in urban forestry development. Together, these talks showcase innovative solutions for resilient food systems and environmental stewardship.
